BIG LIGHT
Big Light is a rock band from San Francisco. Formed in 2007 as a vehicle for singer/guitarist Fred Torphy to get his songs into the world, the band achieved instant recognition and legitimacy with the early addition of bass player Steve Adams. A fixture in the Bay Area music scene and founding member of pop/rock jam stars ALO, here Adams gets to flex his rock & roll muscles.
Inspired by contemporary bands like My Morning Jacket, The Slip, Dr. Dog and Wilco, more than specific stylistic similarities, it’s a mindset that Big Light shares with these acts. Rounding out the band is co-founder/drummer Bradly Bifulco and guitarist Jeremy Korpas.
Big Light’s full-length debut, Animals In Bloom (released March 2, 2010 through reapandsow) is the next chapter. Featuring Umphrey’s McGee keyboardist Joel Cummins on one song and pedal steel from ALO’s Dan Lebowitz on another, the band was assisted in production of the album by Apollo Sunshine drummer Jeremy Black .
What this band has achieved in less than one year with the current, definitive lineup is remarkable. Some artists struggle for years and never see this level of success or buzz. Listening to the new album and watching the band evolve at such a rapid rate onstage, one gets the feeling that Big Light is poised to get a lot bigger.
