Description
Called a "gentle virtuoso" by the New York Times, guitarist and vocalist Lionel Loueke fuses the traditional sounds of his native West Africa with jazz, soul and European pop influences to create something that is both worldly and familiar. Born in the African country of Benin, Loueke played pop music as a youngster, but an introduction to the music of jazz guitarist George Benson inspired him to take up jazz. He headed to Paris and has since studied at the Berklee College of Music and the Thelonious Monk Institute for Jazz. A one-time sideman to Herbie Hancock, Cassandra Wilson, Angelique Kidjo and many more, Loueke has proven to be a gifted bandleader, composer and improvisor.
