Baroque Opera Hits The High Notes

Cowell Theater

When the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s Opera Theatre presents Pietro Francesco Cavalli’s L’Egisto this month, they are carrying on a 350-year-old tradition. One of the first operas ever written, L’Egisto combines mythological and human characters in a delightful tale of love lost and found in ancient Greece.

Cavalli — who wrote a remarkable 33 operas — was one of the most influential composers of the newly-popular music form in 17th century Italy. Cavalli scored his operas for small orchestras in the new, small opera houses of Venice, where he both played and wrote music at the legendary St. Mark’s in that fabled city.

L’Egisto is one of Cavalli’s earliest operas and is rich in arias, duets, and extraordinary recitatives. This production by the Opera Theatre is sung in Italian with English supertitles. Christopher Larkin conducts, Richard Harrell is the director, and Kathryn Cathcart is the music director.

The SF Conservatory of Music has provided exemplary musical education in San Francisco for more than 90 years. In 2006, the Conservatory moved into its new home at 50 Oak Street in the heart of Civic Center’s symphony, ballet, opera, and museum district.
