Please join us for the next talk from SFAI's Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series:

Doug Rickard’s work evokes provocative connections to a strong tradition of American photography masters, with knowing references to Walker Evans, Robert Frank, and Stephen Shore. He both follows and dramatically advances that tradition, with a documentary strategy that acknowledges an increasingly technological world—a world in which a camera mounted on a car can produce moving evidence of the people and places it is leaving behind. Rickard’s discovery of Google Street View as a vehicle for making photography—a method explored in his recent body of work A New American Picture—was informed by his experimentation with re-photographing and arranging satellite images, amateur snapshots, and commercial and surveillance photographs.

Artist Bio
Rickard was born in San Jose, California, in 1968, and studied U.S. History and Sociology at UC San Diego. He is the founder of American Suburb X and These Americans, aggregating websites for essays on contemporary photography and historical photographic archives. Rickard has exhibited at the MoMA; New York; Yossi Milo Gallery, New York; Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; and Stephen Wirtz Gallery, San Francisco, among others.
