Description

Artist Chris Johanson is dedicated to exploring the quandary that is the modern human condition, traversing the age of consumerism, and other perilous psychological phenomena such as self-help, psychotherapy, and cult spirituality. A veteran of the Northern California punk/skate scene, Johanson has been creating visual images since he was a teenager. His early raw, figurative drawings often utilized found or discarded materials such as reclaimed wood and paper, which were often found in dumpsters or construction sites. Since then he has expanded his oeuvre to include three-dimensional conceptual sculpture and abstraction, albeit executed with a sensitivity and wit perhaps unchallenged by any other artist of his generation.

Artist Bio
American artist Chris Johanson has exhibited extensively in group and solo shows nationally and internationally, including solo shows at Jack Hanley Gallery in San Francisco, Deitch Projects and Mitchell-Innes & Nash in New York, Altman Siegel in San Francisco, and Galerie Georg Kargl in Vienna. He was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial, the 2005 Istanbul Biennial, the 2006 Berlin Biennial. In 2003, Johanson received a SECA award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This year Phiadon will be release a monograph about Johanson. He operates "Awesome Vistas," a record label that produces limited-edition vinyl in collaboration with musicians and artists. Johanson was born in San Jose, California in 1968 and currently splits his time between Portland, Oregon and Los Angeles, California. He is one of SFAI's Winifred Johnson Clive Foundation Distinguished Visiting Fellow for Interdisciplinary Painting Practices.
