The Kingston Trio know their way around Silicon Valley, since the group was formed here over 50 years ago, and played their first show at the Cracked Pot in Redwood City in 1957. A few things happened between now and then, like they started the folk revival, and released 14 top ten records—four of them, in fact, were in the top ten at the same time in 1959, the only time that’s happened in the history of the music charts. Despite being basically a pop act, they influenced both Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. The Trio’s hit “Tom Dooley” is one of the quintessential American folk recordings. There have been several generations of the band at this point (one of its most distinguished alum was John Stewart, who went on to have a huge solo career), so ironically none of the members on this “Back to Where It All Began” tour are actually going back to where they began. Sole surviving original member Bob Shane has been running the show since the mid-70s, but he retired from performing a few years back, leaving longtime members Bill Zorn and George Grove to carry on, along with Rick Dougherty, who joined in 2005 but goes way back with Zorn to the days when they were both in the Limelighters.
