The Blackthorn Tavern, a longstanding Irish pub in the heart of the Inner Sunset, has retooled to present more free events and specials than ever, from Sunday afternoon barbecues and trivia to darts and pool competitions to live music and karaoke. Under new management since 2010, the Blackthorn retains its friendly, down-to-earth neighborhood appeal while adding more events, a photo booth, pinball machine and Golden Tee arcade game, not to mention a heat lamp and retractable awning on the outdoor smoking patio.

Blackthorn Tavern is at 834 Irving St., between Ninth and 10th avenues, in San Francisco. It is one block from Golden Gate Park, a 10-minute walk from the Academy of Sciences and de Young Museum. Blackthorn is just steps from the N Judah streetcar, in one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods.
