Kabuki on Film: Mishima's "Sardine Seller's Net of Love"A lowly sardine seller has fallen in love with a beautiful courtesan who is way out of his league. Luckily, his father has an idea: he could impersonate a samurai lord from a distant province and win her heart! But will he be found out? Will she see through his ploy? (synopsis)
The class explores a film version of the play, one of the few light romantic comedies in the Kabuki canon. The word “delightful” really applies to this delicious little confection, Mishima’s affectionate gift to Kabuki. In Japanese with English translation.
