Description
In barely six months, Cafe Stritch has hosted some incredible shows. There was, of course, that infamous secret Built to Spill show, but then there have also been bands like alt-rock heavyweights Grouplove, jazz great Steve Turre and indie-darlings Bad Veins. Up next: Jonathan Richman, who is arguably one of the best performers alive-and legendary in terms of his influence on punk rock/new wave via his '70s band, Modern Lovers. But he's all around amazing. His scenes in 1998's Something About Mary are so good, they are among the best moments in any of the Farley Brothers movies. Live, nowadays, it's just him, his acoustic guitar, usually backed by Tommy Larkins on the cocktail drum kit. He's hilarious, endearing, suave, and just full of childlike innocence that may seem like an act, but totally isn't. (Aaron Carnes)
