Description
From bittersweet Yiddish tunes about gefilte fish and chicken to the delicatessen parodies of Mickey Katz and Allan Sherman, to gastronomic routines by Myron Cohen and Jackie Mason, Jewish entertainers have served up homespun comedy and songs about food for more than a century.Ted Merwin, the author of “In Their Own Image: New York Jews in Jazz Age Popular Culture,” and a forthcoming history of the New York Jewish deli, will explore the way culture, food and identity converged to create a new public profile for American Jews.
This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Jews on Vinyl.
Free with admission. Admission is $5 after 5 PM.
