Description
***Opening Reception for the artist: Thursday, Jan 11th, 6 to 9pmLincart is very pleased to open our 2007 schedule with a solo show by local artist, Jeff Burwell.
Did modernism ever really end? Did it really become passe to engage in making oil painting that smell like art, and sculpture that you back up into while looking at the paintings? Looking at Jeff Burwell’s prodigious output of objects, you would probably never recall that NOT making objects once became such a nifty strategy for recent art school graduates. He seems to revel in making messes, out of which come happy accidents and unpredictable strokes of brilliance.
Burwell’s bold and simple canvasses employ a kind of one-two punch that typically combine both of his great loves: blacksmithing and wine making. Richly embedded in the the oil and epoxy landscapes are the residues of his cultural and life processes: metal shavings and bronze dust, as well as detritus from the wine making process: grape hulls, seeds and stems. The resulting images are striking abstract universes that glowingly reveal the artist’s love of the tactile. Also on view, is a suite of hand fabricated steel sculptures, which in addition to informing the canvasses on the wall, they also complete a striking figure on their own.
A studied enologist as well as an apprentice blacksmith (working under the direction of infamous local slow food guru, Angelo Garro), CAA graduate Burwell looks for an all-encompassing form that reflects both his quotidian artisanal rituals and his passionate studio experimentation. And, in this work, he finds success.
Hope to see you there!
