About the Artists
Pat Martino Trio — Sunday, June 24
Filoli’s 2012 Jazz Series opens with one of the finest jazz guitarists in the world, Pat Martino. Leading an energetic trio of Hammond B-3 organist Pat Bianchi and drummer Carmen Intorre Jr., Martino will thrill listeners on his custom guitar with master precision and signature riffs. Emerging as a guitar giant in the 60s, his remarkable life story is poignantly told in his just published autobiography ‘Here And Now.’ “Mr. Martino is adding more layers to his myth.” - New York Times
Arturo Sandoval — Sunday, July 8
Filoli presents Cuban born jazz trumpeter, pianist and composer, Arturo Sandoval. Mr. Sandoval is fluent in at least four musical languages. He can burn through Afro-Cuban groove, tear up a bebop tune, soar over a Mozart concerto and soothe you with a luscious ballad; all with equal power and grace. The Filoli audience will quickly recognize that Arturo is one of the most brilliant and prolific musicians of our time.
“ …..unabashedly spectacular” - New York Times
“An Afternoon of Swing” — Sunday, July 29
Rossano Sportiello with Nicki Parrott, Hal Smith and Stephanie Trick
A phenomenal tribute to great traditional American swing and stride music is headed up by the sensational arranger/pianist Rossano Sportiello. Playing with Rossano will be the charming and terrific bassist/vocalist Nicki Parrott, and that cool swinging drummer Hal Smith, a veteran of so many NPR appearances. Plus, for the first time ever, Filoli will place not one, but TWO pianos on the Filoli stage, to make room for a young rising sensation in the jazz world - pianist Stephanie Trick. “Incredibly talented, sweet natured, and unpretentious musicians who swing like crazy-- traits the Filoli audience always loves.” - Paul Blystone, Filoli Producer
Jane Monheit — Sunday, August 12
Jazz at Filoli continues its tradition of bringing top jazz vocalists to their stage, and Jane Monheit fits the bill perfectly. She is an extraordinarily gifted singer, whose sincere and romantic interpretations of exceptional songs have made her a favorite in both the jazz and cabaret worlds, earning Monheit numerous accolades in the past decade. Her plush voice and amazing dynamic range display a polished technique, while confident, playful and at ease. Monheit’s accompanying band will add tasteful flourishes to her heartfelt singing.
“She has, in a word, everything.” - Time Magazine
Cyrus Chestnut Quartet — Sunday, August 26
Filoli is proud to present the virtuosic and playful pianist, Cyrus Chestnut. Mr. Chestnut’s hard-swinging, soulful sounds have become a staple in the jazz community. Blending contemporary jazz, traditional jazz and gospel, plus the occasional seasonings of Latin and samba, Chestnut gives himself plenty of freedom to explore different emotions, while keeping his music in recognizable form. His band of top-notch musicians will include a special guest - the superlative saxophonist from the New York scene, Joel Frahm.

Catherine Russell — Sunday, September 23
Filoli’s Jazz Series ends in swinging style with a pantheon of 21st-century jazz divas, vocalist Catherine Russell. Catherine is a native New Yorker born to musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was a pioneering pianist, composer, bandleader, and Louis Armstrong’s long-time sidekick. Her mother, Carline Ray, is a bassist, guitarist, and vocalist. Hailed for her timeless jazz croon, Russell is known for rediscovering and reinterpreting jazz classics. Backed by a swinging band, her brilliant singing will take listeners on a trip through swing, blues, R&B, and timeless traditional jazz tunes.
