Description
WHAT: NewPark Mall celebrates African-American culture and history with its January and February exhibit featuring African items and artifacts, blacks in the military, Civil Rights, music, art, hats and crowns, religious experience, sports, Cowboys & Cowgirls -contributions to the old west, Greek organizations (fraternities & sororities), inventions, kids' corner, saving our young men and books written by the poet Maya Angelou and other writers.In addition to the wide variety of items on display, the AAC&HS will host live entertainment throughout January and February featuring Pamela Page, a master violinist, American Pen award recipient and school teacher. Spurred Up and California Wildseed Cowgirls, interpretive presentation, Akoma Arts, a multi-ethnic group representing West African drum, dance and vocal styles, including African-American, Latin-American and Caribbean Diaspora.

The Cultural Corner, which opened in May 2011, provides exhibit space for the work of local artisans, including painters, sculptors, photographers and digital artists. • The exhibit will be closed: January 11, in observance of the 38th annual celebration honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at Newark First Presbyterian Church, and February 14 in observance of the 41st Annual Black History Month celebration, at the Newark Community Center.
