Jane Fulton Alt's The Burn

Corden|Potts Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibit, The Burn, the work of Chicago-based photographer, Jane Fulton Alt. The exhibit will be on view from August 31 through October 30. A reception, which is open to the public, will take place on Saturday, September 25, from 2 pm to 5 pm.

Corden/Potts Gallery is located at 49 Geary Street, Suite 211, in San Francisco. The gallery is open 11 am to 5:30 pm Tuesdays through Saturdays, and until 7:30 pm on the first Thursday of each month.

Fulton Alt shot The Burn while accompanying restoration ecologists on prescribed burns in the country's heartland. She says she was "drawn to the ephemeral quality of a single moment when life and death do not seem opposed to each other, but are parts of a single process to be accepted as a whole."

"Controlled burns imitate naturally occurring fires." she explains, "by removing accumulated dead vegetation and releasing seeds from dormancy. By opening the woodlands to more sunlight, the fires prepare the soil for new spring growth, and the cycle of renewal continues."

Fulton Alt has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally and is the recipient of numerous awards. Her work can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, New Orleans Museum of Art, Smithsonian Museum of American History, Beinecke Library at Yale University, Centro Fotografico Alvarez Bravo in Oaxaca, Mexico, Center for Photography at Woodstock, Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, De Paul University Art Museum, Southwest Museum of Photography and the collections of William Hunt and Rick and Deann Bayless. Fulton Alt is the recipient of the 2007 Illinois Arts Council Fellowship Award and the 2007-2009 Ragdale Foundation Fellowships. Her work on Hurricane Katrina has been published in a book entitled Look and Leave: Photographs and Stories of New Orleans's Lower Ninth Ward, while her most recent work, Crude Awakenings, offers a commentary on the Gulf Coast oil spill. Fulton Alt’s photographs explore universal issues of humanity, reflecting an interest in the mysteries of life and the non-material world. Her photographs ask us to consider issues of love, loss, and spirituality, which transcend notions of race, religion and culture.
