Is there anything James Franco can't do? Actor, painter, writer, director ... . Born at Stanford Hospital in 1978, Franco spent his formative years in Palo Alto. Now, the star has published a memoir called A California Childhood (Insight Editions; $29.99). The collage-like volume mixes together nostalgic snapshots of Franco's childhood with samples of his artworks, poems and stories. The result attempts to balance the sweet suburban side of Palo Alto with the troubles and angst of life in nearby East Palo Alto. The more expensive tickets for this homecoming include a copy of the book.
