Originally conceived as an eight-piece orchestra, Tulsa’s Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey scaled down to a keys-bass-drums trio and took to the road in early 2000, more recently enlisting the talents of guitarist Chris Combs. A collective approach to spontaneous composition is at the root of the group’s impressionistic forays. As pianist Brian Haas contests, “we don't need a leader.” Such egalitarianism imbues every performance with urgency and excitement, as well it should; even the band doesn’t know what to expect. When the pieces inevitably fall into place, the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey takes on a life independent of its parts–a living, breathing testament to the possibilities of improvisation.http://www.jfjo.com
