Description

Invidious is an intimate and surreal dance-theater experience that delves into the drama beneath the shiny veneer of the American Dream. Performed site-specifically inside of a home in San Francisco's Mission District, Invidious will submerge audiences into a world occupied by the deranged desires, disoriented hopes, and broken realities of American life.

-
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These words have become synonymous with the American Dream - the idea that anyone can succeed and prosper if they work hard enough. But, what happens to our character in the process? How does our pursuit of happiness sabotage our contentment in the here and now, and breed animosity and envy? Charles Slender and his contemporary dance company, FACT/SF, confront the dark underbelly of the American Dream in Invidious, and intimate and immersive work of dance-theater created site-specifically inside a home in San Francisco's Mission District.

Cross the threshold of the Invidious house and delve into the drama that lives beneath the shiny veneer of the incessantly optimistic (and frequently invidious) myth of the American Dream. Audiences will experience four separate performances, occurring in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living room. Much like flipping through the channels of a television, the audience will be lead through the house, viewing short snippets of each performance as they move from room to room. As the audience enters and exits each room, performances continue uninterrupted, so when the audience returns a few moments later, the scene has changed, information has been missed, and it is up to each audience member to put the pieces together.
