Description

Do you love the taste of fresh eggs but resent paying $6/dozen for them at the farmer's market? Do you value access to some of the best restaurants in the country but dream of creating a bucolic wonderland in your breezeway? Does the thought of a cooing bird in your tiny backyard make you swoon? Are you anxious to re-connect with your food sources? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might already be considering keeping chickens in the city.
In this Urban Kitchen SF class, Nicole Kramer, urban homesteader and owner of FARMcurious divulges all the tricks and techniques to successfully keeping chickens in the city. From deciphering municipal codes and keeping your neighbors happy to locating free sources of food, the class will cover all you need to know about keeping backyard chickens.

Nicole will begin with the reasons she keeps chickens, listing the perks along with some of the pitfalls to help you determine whether this hobby is right for your lifestyle. She'll then move on to selecting breeds that fit your circumstances and creating the perfect urban chicken environment. The class will cover feeding, housing and caring for chickens throughout the different stages of their lives. Nicole will offer fun facts and helpful advice throughout the class, empowering participants to get started on their chicken-keeping journey.

Nicole will also bring some tasty homemade treats to demonstrate the superior flavor of a fresh egg vs. a store-bought egg.

At the end of the class, everyone will go home with a list of valuable resources to help new chicken owners, some of Nicole's favorite egg-based recipes and a stylish FARMcurious ceramic egg holder in which to store their precious bounty once the chickens are laying. For anyone interested, there will be an optional follow-up visit on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 11am-12pm to Nicole's farm in Oakland to see the chickens in person.
