Independent Artists' Week (IAW)-The third-annual, week-long arts event celebrating the work of the Bay Area's independent artists and their supporters takes place in the Fillmore District on Monday, September 6 through Saturday, September 11, 2010. The event is a series of pop-up art studios and galleries, industry education and networking events, film screenings, and live art performances. Last year, more than 1,000 people attended IAW. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

Monday, September 6
What: Artists create their work live
When: Noon-4 pm
Cost: FREE
Where: Fillmore Center Plaza (Fillmore & O'Farrell Street)

"Labor of Love" is a live art celebration with more than 18 artists. Live music, DJs, live painting, dance and art sales. The event kicks off with a youth showcase from 12 Noon to 1:30 pm. Emerging artists, including poets, musicians and DJs and dancers perform until 4 pm.

Tuesday, September 7
What: Speed networking for artists with industry professionals
When: 7 pm-9 pm
Cost: $5 with RSVP; $10 at the door
Where: Yoshi's SF, 1330 Fillmore

"Opportunity Knocks" a speed dating meets networking event where emerging artists have 15-minutes to meet one-on-one with industry professionals to show their work, gather advice on how to take their craft to the next level, or how to grow the audience for their work. Music producers, entertainment-marketing specialists, fashion executives, record labels and art gallery owners donate their time to support up-and-coming artists. Artists are encouraged to bring their music, portfolios, scripts, apparel, or other artistic medium for critique.

Tuesday, September 7
What: Late Night Live Tuesdays-music and dance with Bay Area band So Timeless
When: 9 pm-midnight;
Cost: $5 before 9 pm; $7 after
Where: Yoshi's SF, 1330 Fillmore

Stay after the speed-networking event to listen to the local band favorite, So Timeless.


Wednesday, September 8
What: Go Green Art Fair & Bay Vibes Global Movement Night
When: 8 pm- midnight
Cost: $5 before 9 pm; $7 after
Where: Yoshi's SF, 1330 Fillmore

"Go Green" a sustainability/ eco art event art fair. Local artists showcase their art created from sustainable and recycled material.

SF Environment will share tips on creating art responsibly. Danielle Siembieda, The Art Inspector (an eco-art certification process), will lead a workshop complete with a demonstration of the kilowatt and VOC readers used in her work. Nannette Harris - the Green artist who paints people blue - will paint live.

Enjoy live painting, DJs, fashion shows and live music by Bay Vibes' Global Movement during the fair.


Thursday, September 9
What: Night of International Art-Awards Ceremony/ Screening of Ni Wakati/Tiny Drops Fundraiser/ Break Dance and Cypher to Indian Dohl drums
When: 7 pm- 9 pm
Cost: FREE, but donations encouraged (benefit for Tiny Drops-hip-hop community centers in Mumbai and Delhi, India, for kids who live in poverty).
Where: African American Art and Culture Complex, 762 Fulton Street

Awards Ceremony - A celebration to say "thank you" to the amazing Bay Area Artists making a global impact. International Hip Hop artists caught on film from Kenya, India, and Ghana will be played in collaboration with the current exhibition, "Elements of Hip Hop: The ART of a Movement". The film, Ni Wakati, about the passing of the torch from yesterday's civil rights leaders to two of Hip Hop's new revolutionaries - M1 of Dead Prez and Umi of POW, will be shown. The night ends with a b-boy battle and cypher break dancing to the beat of Indian Dohl Drums. The film, fundraiser, cypher, and break dancing work together to show the ability of Hip Hop to form a global arts movement.

Friday, September 10
What: BYOA/Fillmore Art Walk
When: 6 pm- midnight
Cost: FREE
Where: The Fillmore District. Fillmore Street between Eddy and Sutter

The Second Fillmore Art Walk/BYOA- (Bring Your Own Art) is a platform for 60 + artists to showcase their talents, create their art in front of an audience and to mingle. Art will be displayed and performed and created in venues along Fillmore Street including Marcus Books, The Fillmore Center Plaza, The Jazz Heritage Center, Fat Angel, Bumzy's Cookies and Miyako Ice Scream, Jazz'z, Starbucks, and the West Bay Conference Center. Local restaurants will be offering drink and food specials in collaboration with this event. Art includes dancers, DJs, painters, bands, jewelers, graffiti artists, filmmakers, fashion designers and spoken word artists.


Saturday, September 11
What: The Art of the Healing Arts
When: 9 am- 1 pm
Cost: FREE
Where: Fillmore Center Plaza, Fillmore at O'Farrell Street

A look into the art and craft of yoga, tai chi, acupuncture, massage therapy, and meditation. This event takes place alongside the Fillmore Farmer's Market. Come and participate, ask questions and learn about taking care of your body from master body workers. First session starts at 9 am at The Fillmore Center Plaza.
