Description
LAND OF THE GRASSHOPPER SONG is a historical musical based on the book of the same name. Based on the award-winning true-account book, GRASSHOPPER SONG is a heartwarming story that follows the adventures of two white women who have been dispatched by the United States government in 1908 to be “field matrons” for the Karuk Indian Tribe of Northern California. The play follows the adventures of our heroines, Mary Arnold and Mabel Reed as they travel by horseback, by foot, and in a dugout canoe to reach their destination; a remote place at which they were the only white women in a 60-mile stretch of territory. In the process of attempting to “civilize” the Indians, the women are in turn, transformed. After two years of service, they left with profound affection and respect for the people they had lived among.
