Description
William Byrd’s ethereal O Magnum Mysterium; brilliant works for multiple choirs by Praetorius, Hassler, and Gallus; Biber’s transcendent ”Annunciation” sonata by renowned baroque violinist Elizabeth Blumenstock; and charming old carols. The SFBC Baroque Ensemble accompanies the Choir with the gloriously festive sound of sackbuts, a baroque predecessor of the modern trombone. With multiple choirs singing around the audience by candlelight, the mood of peace and joy enraptures audiences year after year.“The true magic of the evening, however, was the candlelit portion. After the intermission, the audience was suddenly plunged into utter darkness…the choir slowly processed into the church, each member carrying a candle….choir members were stationed in the aisles, the front, and the balconies.
