Description
(San Francisco, CA) December, 2009: For the month of December, local wood sculptor Brian Andrews will be exhibiting his work at the Bean There Café in San Francisco’s Lower Haight. The show will kick off with an opening reception on Friday, December 4th, from seven to ten PM. The reception is timed to coincide with the Lower Haight art walk.Andrews’ “Imposed Order(s)” brings together two series: Alterity and Fixed Landscapes. Both series grapple with what Andrews sees as man’s “othering” of the natural world. Alterity explores the ways in which shared cultural esthetics help form a sense of self and other. Fixed Landscapes explores humanity’s relationship with nature, and the ways in which mapmaking and ornament help make sense of the natural world. Tying the two series together is the exploration of how this othering helps us make sense of the world around us.
The pieces in Alterity combine carving traditions from around the globe, collaging ornamental forms to create subtle figurative pieces. “Each piece in the series contains at least one abstracted figure,” Andrews notes. “In part, it’s about the ways in which we create a sense of self, by imposing a sense of separateness, an otherness, between ourselves and other people, and between ourselves and the natural world.”
The Fixed Landscapes series explores these ideas further. Gentle curves evoke natural landforms while traditional ornamental styles combined with topographical symbols evoke the imposed sense of order created in mankind’s interactions with the landscape.
The Bean There Café is a fixture in the Lower Haight, serving as a community meeting place, coffee shop, and showcase for local artists.
