Description
San Francisco's Ill Gato falls into the recent indie rock tradition of blending modern music with sounds from another time and place, not unlike Gogol Bordello, Beirut, and even San Jose's own Mumlers. Ill Gato have taken the music of America and Europe from a few centuries back, and blended it with something Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire or Neutral Milk Hotel would have recorded. The music is gorgeous, accented by their diverse instrumentation of horns, mandolins, harmonicas, pianos, guitars, and melodicas. But unlike Mumlers or Beirut, you never get to feel entirely lost in another time or place. There's enough Modest Mouse and Death Cab for Cutie to keep you planted in 2010. - Aaron Carnes sanjose.com
