Description
There’s Western swing and then there’s Western swagger. As Hud, Paul Newman has the latter down pat. And when he’s not strutting in his denims and tooled leather boots, he’s kicking up dust on the Texas Panhandle in his sleek pink Cadillac. He’s a hell-raising cowboy whose rancher-father (Melvyn Douglas), as upright as a fence-post, is more-than-mildly disgusted by his son’s unhinged amorality. The real beef emerges when Daddy Bannons’ herd of cattle is stricken with hoof-and-mouth disease. Hud’s solution: sell ’em up North. This cowed conflict plays out on an arid and impoverished Texas expanse, captured with grinding grandeur by James Wong Howe (who won an Academy Award for his widescreen work). When Hud’s not trying to sell his neighbors bad beef, he’s making no-good with the ranch’s housekeeper (Patricia Neal), whose earthy sexuality stretches all the way to the horizon. Hud is not about the free range, but that part of nature that needs fences.
