Description

This 2 1/2 hour class demystifies the publishing industry; revealing what to expect when you submit your novel and explaining the best way to find a publisher. Among the topics to be covered are:

Do I need to complete the entire manuscript before submitting it? Do I need a literary agent? What does a literary agent do? How much does an agent charge? How do I find an agent? How do I know if it’s the right agent for me? How does the agent find a publisher for my book? Can I change agents? How can I submit my book directly to a publisher? What do I need beside the manuscript? How do publishers review submissions and decide what to accept? How important is a large advance from a publisher? What are royalties and do they vary? How involved will I be in the editing, design, and promotion of the book? Should I self-publish instead? Should I self-publish with the intention of getting a commercial publisher interested? Does it get easier to publish your second and third books?

The class offers insiders’ perspectives on the best way to present your novel to literary agents and book publishers, and briefly discusses the advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing; the class is not an explanation of how to self-publish your book. You do not need to have completed a manuscript to benefit from the class, which is aimed at all levels of publishing experience. All attendees will receive a copy of The Essential Guide to Getting Your Book Published by Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry (Workman Publishing).
