Description

( ( ( ( (H O U S E P I T A L I T Y) ) ) ) ) presents an exclusive appearance from a wildly-skilled and eclectic producer from Japan, with an opening set from a skilled local musician and genre-blending DJ:

::MAX ESSA (Is It Balearic?, Bear Funk, Feel Music | Japan)::
::COLE (oWNERSHIP, Happiest Hours | San Francisco)::
**bday set!**

Groove Lounge:

::MIKE BEE (Vinyl Dreams, Housepitality | San Francisco)::
::JOEL CONWAY (Bubble, Housepitality | San Francisco)::

From his first release as a producer in 1993 (on the infamous Warp Records label), to his later productions for established house labels (Paper Recordings, etc.), Max Essa has established himself as a skilled producer who is slightly outside the norm. Having DJed at clubs throughout his home in Japan, and gigs all over the world, and the release of a whole slew of productions on wildly varied (yet respected) labels of note, Max's skills are simply not in question.

Opening up, with a 3 hour set, our friend Cole is back. He's played for us in our Groove Lounge several times, and has amazed each time. His last set in the back room was somehow more bangin' than our main room at that moment, packed with dancing people, hot and sweaty, and yet he wasn't playing banging house tunes... his expertise is in the combination of genres, an ability to play tunes that appeal to a widely varied crowd, while keeping everyone dancing, laughing, and smiling. He's a musician, a music teacher, a producer, a DJ, and an all-around amazing cat. We're happy to have him play the main room, finally.

In our Groove Lounge, we're going overboard again, hosting both of our Groove Lounge residents for what is sure to be an adventure in the chillest, deepest, and most funky slower-BPM tunes around. Mike Bee is fresh from the opening of his amazing new vinyl record store. He's been hosting big-name DJs and musicians on tour to come in, buy records, and even play for him... he's busy as hell but we couldn't be happier for him, as he proves to the world that music stores are not dead. He's also one of the best DJs we've ever had the pleasure of working with, and it's been too long since he's played.

Sharing the decks, Joel Conway will be bringing us his brand of amazing tunes.... The synergy between Joel and Mike, and their extensive vinyl collections, is one of the keys to Housepitality's success...we couldn't do it without them... and wouldn't want to. WERK!

Max Essa

Max Essa made his debut as a producer on the legendary Warp Records label in 1993. Throughout the ‘90s he went on to make records for many of the seminal house music labels of the era including Paperecordings, D.i.Y Discs/Strictly 4 Groovers and D-Vision in Italy. During this period he DJ’d at clubs such as the Hacienda in Manchester, Heaven In London as well as The End-Up in San Francisco and numerous parties in the U.K and Europe.

In 2005 Max started working with the London based label, Bear Funk. Since then he has produced two solo L.Ps (‘Continental Drift’ in 2009 and ‘White Shoes Blue Dreams’ in 2010) and two collaboration L.Ps with label boss, Stevie Kotey (Soiree’s ‘Zim Zim Zah Zah’ in 2009 and ‘The World of Progressive Disco’ in 2011). In 2010 Max released his second 12” for the Is It Balearic? record label. The main track, a 20-minute epic entitled ‘Panorama Suite’, received huge critical acclaim and cemented Max’s reputation as both a composer and producer. He followed this in 2011 with the highly successful 'Feel It In Your Body' which was championed by Andrew Weatherall and the flipside 'Heartache' which was playlisted by NYC disco legend, David Mancuso amongst others.

Since 2008 Max has been living in Japan and is a regular guest DJ at Tokyo clubs such as Loop, Eleven and Seco Bar. In 2010 he started his own record label called Jansen Jardin. The first releases on the label received major support from DJ’s such as Mark E, Soft Rocks and Dimitri from Paris and Jansen Jardin continues to go from strength to strength. Over the last couple of years Max has been kept busy remixing at a furious rate for labels such as Leng, Disques Sinthomme, Miso Records and Catune (Japan). 2012 also saw the release of a wonderful 4 track EP for Valley Sound entitled M.O.D.F.D.M.V, the Jan Ken Po LP on Nang and a 2nd Soiree LP, `Let`s Play Tennis`, recorded with Stevie Kotey and released through Bear Funk.

The work rate shows no sign of letting up in 2013 with Max`s 3rd solo LP, `Won Ton Sunrise`, due on Bear Funk in the Spring as well as an amazing new 12" for Is It Balearic? called, `Dovodah!` / `Burning Palms` with remixes from Lee Douglas and the excellent Hardway Bros. Having notched up around 80 events in 2012 his DJ schedule for 2013 remains full with resident monthly sessions at underground spots like Bar Bonobo, Koara and Aoyama Tunnel and guest slots at clubs such as Seco (Tokyo), Soundscape (Nagano) and Mago (Nagoya).
