Horns for the Holidays

QUADRE–The Voice of Four Horns returns to Mountain View with its fifth annual presentation of HORNS FOR THE HOLIDAYS on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 7 pm in the new Graham Theater at Saint Francis High School.

Regarded as an ensemble that "zaps the myth that classical stuff's stuffy" (Birmingham News), the group performs original compositions and seasonal favorites for French horn quartet. With a special performance of Kerry Turner’s Quartet #3 along works for the Swiss alphorn, QUADRE will also perform Heinrich Hübler’s Concerto for 4 Horns and Wind Ensemble accompanied by a 100 person collaborative band made up of music students from Los Altos High School, Mountain View High School, and Saint Francis High School.

The ensemble, QUADRE - which has toured throughout the United States and has been awarded nationally recognized music residencies from the San Francisco Symphony & Chamber Music America - performs some of its most popular repertoire from its critically acclaimed holiday CD released in 2008, Horns for the Holidays. Jingle Bells and Santa caps will make an appearance along with arrangements by Daniel Wood, Artistic Director of the ensemble, of Carol of the Bells, Little Drummer Boy, and Up on the Housetop. In addition to the combined band performing with Quadre, a surprise narrator will recite readings from the “The Gift of Magi” and “Twas the Night before Christmas.”

With support from the Arts Council Silicon Valley, local foundations, and individual private donors, QUADRE has worked with the schools during the Fall in conjunction with its education program - 'TOOT YOUR OWN HORN'. As part of the program, the professional musicians of QUADRE went into these schools to demonstrate and teach ensemble skills, music fundamentals, and repertoire. Part of the concert is dedicated to winners of a solo competition from each school. Wood says "this is a wonderful opportunity to come and support the outstanding music and talent that is being nurtured in South Bay schools."
