Description

Traditional coupling and family styles such as arranged marriages, multiple generations living together, specific roles and expectations imposed upon family members and long-held religious beliefs are part of the Indian culture. Living in another culture, such as America poses challenges and possibilities that need reflection and skill to navigate. The American drive to be independent, separate from family and pursue individual desires often clashes with Indian roots of interconnectedness and service to the family and culture.

In this talk psychologist, Dr. Amlani will explore some core, personal themes of what it is to be Indian in America. He will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each culture and offer ways of holding the tension between the collective-self and the individual-self. He will offer perspectives and skills in living and growing as a bi-cultural person.

Alzak Amlani, Ph.D. is a counselng psychologist who writes the monthly, "Dear Doctor," column for India Currents Magazine. He is a professor of psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, where he teaches multiculturalism for the psychotherapist. He has presented at conferences in Delhi, California, and Moscow.
