Holiday in Wales (Season Concert I)

The Baroque Festival's 2010 season of "Musical Voyages" makes its first stop in 19th-century Wales, where Concert I, Holiday in Wales recreates the music of Welsh gypsy and harpist John Roberts. Acclaimed harpist Cheryl Ann Fulton and ensemble will take us to 1889 at Palé Mansion, where Roberts and his 9 sons performed for non other than Queen Victoria. Fulton is recognized as a leading pioneer in the study and performance of historical harps. This performance takes place at the UCSC Music Center Recital Hall and begins at 7:30 pm.

This opening concert will also feature the Baroque Festival's 2nd annual Instrument Exhibit (intermission), where local makers and performers will display a small collection of period instruments and be available for questions from concert-goers (period instruments are concise replicas and in rarer cases original specimens of historic instruments). A meet-the-artist reception for donors and subscribers concludes the evening. Under the season theme of Musical Voyages, the Festival will present a series of 5 travel-themed concerts this season, starting in February and ending in May.

2010 Concert Season:

Musical Voyages – A Grand Tour of Early Music Worlds

I. Holiday in Wales - Saturday, February 6. An evening of Welsh airs and dances as heard by Queen Victoria with Cheryl Ann Fulton on Welsh triple harp and ensemble.

II. Shakespeare in London - Saturday, February 20. Music for voice, virginals, and lute by Elizabethan composers and Shakespeare-collaborators Morley and Johnson, and Baroque composers Locke and Arne.

III. Imaginary Intersections: Raga and Raj - Saturday, March 20. A musical journey to North India of the 1780s with works inspired by North Indian classical music yet written for early European instruments by Indian music composer-performer Barry Phillips.

IV. Venetian Tapestry - Saturday, April 10. Witness the birth of the Baroque in the City of Light opulent music for voices and brass alongside melodies popularized by the city's famous gondoliers.

V. Jefferson's Jigge - Saturday, May 1. Folk and baroque tunes from the times of Thomas Jefferson, including colonial melodies, fancy continental imports, and passionate toetapping hymnody.
