Saratoga History Museum Presents Historic Bay Area Visionaries

The Saratoga Historical Foundation and the Saratoga Library invites you to attend a free lecture by Robin Chapman based on her new book, “Historic Bay Area Visionaries”. The lecture will take place October 24 at 7 PM at the Saratoga Library (13650 Saratoga Avenue in Saratoga).
The lecture covers how six individuals triumphed over adversity and flourished in the Santa Clara Valley:
*Lope Inigo became an alcalde, but even more important was one of just four Ohlone Indians to gain a Mexican land grant rancho in the Santa Clara Valley and his became Moffett Field.
*Thomas Foon Chew, immigrated from China to the US and due to his progressive ideas, Bay City Cannery in Milpitas began a period of rapid growth that made it the third largest cannery in the United States at that time.
*Juana Briones, born in 1802 was among the few women in California of her time to own property in her own name, and became a skilled farmer, rancher, and businesswoman in the San Francisco and Santa Clara Valley.
*Noted author Robert Louis Stevenson wrote an article that led to historic preservation in California, especially the preservation of California's missions and adobes.
*Sarah Winchester owned property all over the region and did not spend all those 38 years building her "house of mystery!" She came to California and invested in land, something very few people know.
*Actor and filmmaker Charlie Chaplin came to Niles in 1915 and during the four months he was here he helped invent what became the international industry of movie-making.
