Herschel Walker Announces New Career
Former NFL running back Herschel Walker made it official today (Dec. 8) at the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose: he will be competing in Mixed Martial Arts through Strikeforce. Walker, already familiar with martial arts, particularly Taekwando, says he has had to forget everything he learned and come into the gym ready to start from scratch. While sparring with Cain Velasquez, Walker showed that he was in very good shape. Apparently, age is not one of his concerns; if anything, he says it will motivate him to train harder. When asked what sparked his decision, Walker says, "It's all about competition." To prove that this is not a gimmick or money-making scheme, Walker is donating all his proceeds to charity. Walker is already scheduled for his first fight: in Miami at the Bank Atlantic Center against an unknown opponent on Jan. 30, 2010.
