When Helmet first blew up in 1992, all of us non-metalheads gave them a pass because they were "real" musicians. They didn't just bang their heads and crunch guitars, they mixed it up with odd time signatures, bizarre chords, staccato rhythms, and trance-like tribal repetitions. Yet, as I listen back, their songs really captured the essence of metal, more so than some of the '80s thrash pioneers. The aggressive nature of the genre lends itself quite naturally to Helmet's offbeat bag of tricks. It makes you wonder why it took so long for other metal bands to catch up, and why these guys (who broke up in 1998, and reunited in 2004) have never fully gotten their due. - Aaron Carter sanjose.comMore Info
