Join the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts (SOTA) Instrumental Music Department Friday, November 22, for a celebration of the life and music of Benjamin Britten at Happy Birthday, Benjamin Britten on the occasion of the composer's centenary.
Britten's music will be brought to life at the historic Castro Theater in a one night only tribute featuring some of his best known work ("Fanfare for St. Edmundsbury," "Simple Symphony") and concluding with his beloved children's classic "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra”, a work that has introduced three generations to classical music and was recently featured in Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom."
In addition to the performance by SOTA musicians, the personal journey of Benjamin Britten will be reflected in short readings from correspondence between the composer and his colleagues in the music world, including his personal and professional partner, tenor Peter Pears.
Special guests include members of Grammy Award winning male a cappella chorus Chanticleer, Zoe Rose, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter and SOTA Vocal graduate (2007) and others.
All proceeds benefit the School of the Arts in its ongoing mission to create the next generation of artists, performers and culturally informed citizens.
