Description
The Symphony Silicon Valley orchestra and chorus join forces to present "Guys and Dolls" as part of its Broadway In Concert series. Based on The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown by Damon Runyon, this classic musical follows Nathan Detroit as he bets gambler Sky Masterson that Sky cannot persuade missionary Sister Sarah Brown to accompany him on a trip to Cuba. As Sky attempts to woo Sarah, Nathan is doing all he can to stay outside the matrimonial clutches of his long-suffering fiancée, Miss Adelaide. This romantic and hilarious story takes place in the nostalgic backdrop of mid 20th century New York City, and is populated with gangsters and gamblers, missionary dolls and scantily clad showgirls. What do gamblers, night club singers and the Salvation Army have in common? Well, nothing really except for when you put them all in a musical and call it Guys and Dolls. This production is so quick and energetic, it proves anything can be funny, even a bunch of spatted, pin-striped two-bit hoods singing, "It's a cinch that the bum is under the thumb of some little broad."
As New York gambler Nathan Detroit and his riff-raff associates dance this ensemble number, they set a high-energy standard which is sustained through the entire production. Often neglected by choreographers, the men's troupe in Guys and Dolls keeps you entertained throughout the entire performance with numbers like "Luck Be a Lady" and "Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat."
