Surprisingly enough, when Portland pop-punk band Grizzly released the cheekily titled "Christmas Sucks Since I Found Out Santa Wasn’t Real," it was actually a serious, well-composed and emotional song. The rest of their tunes--the ones without goofy titles--are just as serious, with youthful heart-on-the-sleeve lyrics and harmony-rich melodies. The guys write ultra-catchy, driving tunes, but steer clear from the three-chord simplicity of a lot of pop-punk. Rather, they have elements of later Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco. Their debut EP Small Things, is a nice little release (pun intended), and I expect good things from these young rockers in the future. (Aaron Carnes)
