Description

Gallery Three is pleased to present “Grey Areas,” a solo exhibition by SF-based photographer Colin M. Day, featuring three large scale light paintings along with fifteen smaller pieces. The opening reception will be Saturday, October 6th, from 7-11pm, and is free and open to the public for viewing through November 3rd, 2012.

“Grey Areas” is the result of three years of Colin M. Day documenting from the center of the graffiti/urban art movement and the marijuana industry, and will feature a mix of 120 Medium format film, 35mm shot on a Dental Eye Macro Camera and digital.
A cluster of upward of a hundred small photos will be hung along the stairway showing the massive range of work and chaos that has lead to the central works comprising “Grey Areas.”

Working on a marijuana farm set within a Northern California mountain town, Colin collaborated with the people who work on the farm to capture and translate the energy of the mountain and the lives lived there. “Grey Areas” is an unexpected look into the surprising beauty of an industry many people will never see inside of. Using long exposures and light painting, Colin creates night scenes on the marijuana fields where streaks of illumination compete with the loveliness of the starlit skies.

From the artist:

The Marijuana industry and Urban Art movement are both made possible by those who don't adhere to the rules set forth by the government, and have followed their passion even with the possibility of risking their lives and freedom. Both fields operate in legal grey areas that have thus far protected them from corporate takeover. We all live and operate in grey areas, but in my eyes what these artists and farmers are doing is way more legitimate then the crimes against humanity that a lot of the huge corporations (banks, pharmaceuticals, energy) get away with under the umbrella of their paid for politicians.

Colin M. Day is a filmmaker and photographer based out of San Francisco. He has worked extensively documenting the urban art movement over the years and has worked with wide range of artists such as ROA, Blek le Rat, Eine, Doze Green, Mars-1, Os Gemeos, Herakut, Glen E Friedman, Shephard Fairey, Retna, Alex Grey and many more. He got his start working with Gallery Three and has since expanded to working with galleries and artists across the US and being on the board of directors for Sex + Design Magazine.
