A new study by the Union of Concerned Scientists, Cooler Smarter: Practical Steps for Low-Carbon Living, debunks many cherished facets of sustainable consumption. Among their conclusions:• Buying local food is not the most effective way to combat global warming
• It’s not always best to just keep reusing products like refrigerators and cars
• Just turning off the lights is not the best way to conserve energy
• Hybrid cars are not always the best choice
• Consumers do not have to sacrifice comfort in order to reduce their emissions
What’s a well intentioned consumer to do? Don’t give up! Buying smart and clean is a challenge however there is increasing information available and new products that are better than before however imperfect.
