California Film Institute joins San Francisco Opera in presenting this inaugural cinema series, recorded in high-definition at San Francisco’s historic War Memorial Opera House. One of the world’s leading opera companies, San Francisco Opera is a destination for the greatest international singers, conductors, stage directors and designers. These beautifully filmed versions offer everyone the “best seat in the house” for these dynamic and innovative theatrical productions.
The Rafael’s high-definition presentations are scheduled for Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings in July, with “encore” shows in August. Please note that regular matinee prices do not apply for the Saturday morning shows.
Madama Butterfly
by Giacomo Puccini
Thursday, July 8, 7:00
Saturday, July 10, 10:00am
Thursday, August 12, 7:00
Saturday, August 14, 10:00am
One of the world’s most beloved operas, Madama Butterfly is a classic tale of colliding hearts and cultures set in 19th century Japan. Soprano Patricia Racette gives “an incendiary performance” (San Francisco Chronicle) as Cio-Cio San, a geisha torn tragically between two worlds. Company Music Director Donald Runnicles conducts the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Chorus in this stirring production featuring some of Puccini’s most popular music. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. 160 min. plus intermission with backstage interviews.
Don Giovanni
by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Thursday, July 15, 7:00
Saturday, July 17, 10:00am
Thursday, August 5, 7:00
The Don Juan legend catches fire through Mozart’s musical genius: comedy, seduction, love and ultimate tragedy, all come together in Don Giovanni with one of the greatest scores of all time. Polish baritone Mariusz Kwiecien commands the title role, and Donald Runnicles conducts the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Chorus. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. 185 min. plus intermission with backstage interviews.
Samson and Delilah
by Camille Saint-Saëns
Thursday, July 22, 7:00
Saturday, July 24, 10:00am
The Biblical tale of a hero who is seduced by a woman and loses his heart, his hair and finally his strength, Samson and Delilah provides the context for a Cecil B. DeMille-like extravaganza set to Saint-Saëns’ extraordinarily beautiful music. Tenor Clifton Forbis brings down the house (and the temple), along with Russian mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina and conductor Patrick Summers. Sung in French with English subtitles. 155 min. plus two intermissions including backstage interviews.
La Rondine
By Giacomo Puccini
Thursday, July 29, 7:00
Saturday, July 31, 10:00am
A thoroughly Italian work inspired by Viennese operetta, La Rondine (The Swallow) is a rarely performed Puccini gem about love between a kept woman from high society and a naïve younger man of modest means. Romanian soprano Angela Gheorghiu and Russian tenor Misha Didyk star, and Ion Marin conducts, with a dazzling, opulent Art Deco production designed by Nicolas Joël. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. 125 min. plus intermission with backstage interviews.
