Description
Armed violence on the global scene today is characterized by its "diffusion"—more and more non-state actors acquiring more and more sophisticated means to kill, threaten, and displace more and more innocent persons. The international system of conflict management, largely constructed to deal with conflict between states, not within them and not between non-state combatants, is ill-equipped to address such challenges to peace and security. The immediate prospects for dealing with this problem are bleak, with appalling consequences at a personal level for millions of persons around the globe, the likelihood of more failed states on the horizon, and new strategic challenges for regional and global stability in the years ahead. Dr. Bates Gill, Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), will discuss these developments and their implications on global stability. SIPRI is an independent international institute dedicated to research into conflict, armaments, arms control and disarmament. It was recently named as one of the world’s leading think tanks in the ‘Think Tank Index’ issued by Foreign Policy magazine.Check-in 5:30 PM, Program: 6:00 PM
