"One of the world's great songwriters." –New York TimesSeven-time Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Gilberto Gil has occupied a pivotal role in the evolution of Brazilian music since the 1960’s. He was key among the Tropicalia movement, fusing bossa nova, samba and salsa with rock and folk music-and securing his fame both abroad and at home in Brazil. All the while, he’s walked a tightrope between mainstream accessibility and cutting-edge social commentary, a practice, which earned him a prison sentence and subsequent exile from his homeland. He more recently bade farewell the high-octane hybrid of samba, reggae and funk that made him famous. This scaled-down string ensemble will perform re-imagined acoustic interpretations from Gil’s immense repertoire.
