Description
Some people might remember the Doormice. That was Gavin Neves' energetic indie-rock-folk duo back when he used to live in San Jose a couple years ago. After spending the past few years in Portland, he's returned home and brought with him his latest project, Ghetto Hexes-and it's really different. There are traces of his rock & roll roots, but it's mostly a dark, foreboding, experimental, synthy project, like a lo-fi Dirty Projectors meets Nine Inch Nails meets Beck. The instrumentation includes drums, keys, loops, guitars, computers-everything, and it's all held together with his fringe-pop vocal melodies. They do a compelling cover of Talking Heads' "Burning Down the House," which shows just how weird that song actually is. (Aaron Carnes)
