Description

Gesture & Structure, on view at SLATE contemporary through October 13th, features large-scale oil paintings by Bay Area artist Joanne Fox. Influenced by painters of the 1950s and 60s, and operating in an essentially abstract expressionist mode, Fox’s work attempts to capture states of being – a mood, emotion, or an experience of the outer or inner world.

Many of her bold images are characterized by broad black brush-strokes referring to bridges, freeways, and other built structures. Often they are not necessarily complete objects, but structures in transition – where it is not entirely clear whether they are being built or perhaps being taken apart. While we tend to think of buildings and bridges as solid objects that feel like they have always been there, the Bay Area’s heady pace of development over the last decade shows a process of constantly deconstructing and reconstructing.

Fox describes her recent work as “neither landscape nor cityscape, neither abstract nor figurative,” but rather an “exploration . . .  a fresh way of looking at the world we all live in, a celebration of all the endings and beginnings that are everywhere around us.” It is, in other words, an articulation of not just how the world we live in looks, but how we experience it and its constant state of transformation and flux.
