Description
In 2005, after the deaths of several family members, Michael Deni left his home in New Jersey and came to San Francisco. Combining synthesizer and guitar, he funneled the emotions unearthed by that tragedy into songs that he shared at local open mics. After finding cellist Nathan Blaz and drummer Brian Ostreicher at one of the gigs, the trio formed Geographer and rapidly became an alt-electro sensation. They blend analog and electronic influences in their live performances—looping lyrics and modulating the cello with effects pedals into an amorphously excellent sound of subdued dance beats, astral synths and soul-scraping lyrics.
