Description
Gary Allen’s melancholic love song “Best I Ever Had” embodies the Nashville crooner’s essential ethos: life is tough, so sing about it. His latest album, Living Hard follows suit with heaps of somber balladry and tearful emotion. But like the lyrics to “Best I Ever Had” say, “it’s not so bad”, and songs like “She’s So California” and “Watching Airplanes” provide some solace from the dark clouds, offering visions of sun-bleached hair blowing in wind and blue skies above. It’s tough to find anything truly original in Allen’s repertoire, but originality isn’t exactly a part of the country-rock recipe.
