"From the Badlands to Alcatraz" documents not only the Alcatraz swim, but also the struggle for people living on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota to change their diet and overall health in the face of crushing poverty. Producer/Director Dr. Nancy Iverson, a San Francisco pediatrician, cared for Pine Ridge families in the 1990s. Her film developed from PATHSTAR (www.pathstar.org), a nonprofit she co-founded to help reservation people live healthier lives. Every year, Iverson brings Pine Ridge people to San Francisco to participate in a week-long program culminating with the Alcatraz swim.
