Singer-songwriter Freedy Johnston earned his South Bay stripes in 2007 by covering--and actually breathing some life into--"Do You Know the Way to San Jose." Strangely enough, Johnston is from Kansas, where he was selling bits of his family's farmland to finance his power-pop records until his major label debut in 1994, the same year Rolling Stone named him Songwriter of the Year. The album gave him his biggest hit, "Bad Reputation"--still his signature song--and since then he's continued to release popular, critically acclaimed albums like last year's Rain on the City.
