Scissor & Thread
Scissor & Thread is a new Brooklyn-based label that is a collaboration between DJ/Producer Francis Harris aka Adultnapper / lightbluemover, Shawn Schwartz (owner of the famed nyc DJ shop halcyon,) Michael Scott (owner of long running Atlanta-based house imprint Soco Audio,) and Parisian DJ/Producer Anthony Collins. Despite it's roots in underground dance music, and being fronted by Harris and Collins, two well established artists in the field, Scissor & Thread proudly calls itself an independent label, not a dance imprint, the difference being one of approach. While artist development is somewhat of an anachronism in today's music industry, Scissor and Thread nonetheless aims to establish a platform for artists with more ambitious ideas that expand beyond the confines of the club without regard for stylistic orthodoxy. The label's roster is comprised of a tight knit collective of multi-talented composers, producers, vocalists and instrumentalists collaborating in various configurations on a diversity of projects bound only by Scissor and Thread's well defined aesthetic. The wide-ranging material already lined up is being released under new aliases created specifically for use on Scissor & Thread, making for a level field on which new artists can be received, and a clean slate on which more established acts can explore wider creative possibilities. Following two vinyl-only EPs by the highly touted new act black light smoke, the label recently dropped "lostfound," the first single from "Leland," the moving debut full length composed by Francis Harris as a requiem for his father. Featuring a mesmerizing performance by Danish singer Gry and a phenomenal remix by Matthew Herbert, "lostfound" quickly sold out of it's limited 12" run, even before it was debuted on Pitchfork.com. A second single will be released ahead of the album which is due in February and in the meantime the label will launch a series of slow, melodic and very sexy vocal house EPs baring only the mysterious name Frank & Tony. With label "sewcases" featuring a new improvisational two man live set booked for Art Basel in Miami and BPM Festival to kick off the new year, Scissor and Thread promises to be one of the break out labels of 2012.
A steady stream of Adultnapper tracks have since appeared on some of the world‘s most esteemed labels ‐ Steve Bug’s Audiomatique, Frank Lorber‘s Nummer, Mr. C’s Superfreq, Mule Electronic, Dirt Crew, etc. ‐ and have been hotly tipped by elite DJs ‐ Loco Dice, Danny Tenaglia, Craig Richards, Sven Vath, Laurent Garnier, Sasha, Monika Kruse, Steve Lawler, Danny Howells, etc. ‐ thus firmly establishing Harris as one rare purveyor who steadfastly challenges the conventional wisdom and accepted shortcuts of post modern electronic music.
When Harris is in control of a dancefloor that Adultnapper is truly brought to life. Relying primarily on the ancient art of mixing two records, Harris’ precision skills and thoughtful programming have earned him a reputation as DJ equal to his regard as producer ‐ an uncommom distinction. On the decks, Harris intricately weaves divergent strains into a thick, pumping groove that subtly rises and falls, drawing the crowd ever deeper within his emotion‐laden, melodic journey. Circo Loco at DC10, Ibiza, Cielo in NY, The End, Mulletover in London, Weekend in Berlin, Pawn Shop in Miami, Avalon in LA, are just a few of the world’s discenring floors that have been graced by Adultnapper and been left clamoring for more.
Anthony Collins grew up both in New York and in the South of France. His first taste for music was given to him by his father who shared his passion for jazz with him and had his own recording studio in Los Angeles. It was in France that he later discovered electronic music and fell in love with it. He acquired his first pair of decks at the age of 17 and did his first gig the following year. He played in most of the major clubs on the French Riviera & to push his career a step further, Anthony left his home ground and moved to Paris. Due to hard work and by forcing his way into the shows that matter, he quickly established himself on the scene (and was booked) regularly to play at the city’s most prestigious clubs and also abroad in clubs such as infamous Rex club & Batofar in Paris; Panoramabar & Berghain, Weekend & Watergate in Berlin, Studio 80 in Amsterdam, London’s Fabric, Space , dc10 circoloco & Zoo Ibiza, Goa Roma n’Goa Madrid, BLK! Market New york, BPM conference in playa del carmen to name but a few.. Anthony is also pretty busy with his residency in Paris named “DUST” where he hosts international guests (Seuil, Dinky, Los Updates, Half Hawai,...) Europe’s finest audience have picked up on him and have been showing a lot of interest.
Anthony describes his style as a mix of deep house, house, minimal and deep tech. He's not the type who puts one hit record after another but always blends meticulously chosen tracks with a real artistic reason to it.
