Description

The exhibit contains a series of photographs taken over a period of four years in the Harajuku neighborhood of Tokyo. There is a tradition of performance art and free expression in and around Yoyogi Park on Sunday afternoons, which includes young women and the occasional young man dressing up in the type of handmade outfits seen in these photographs. Harajuku is a fashion mecca. The initial goal of this project was to produce a series of photographs of these individuals, but rather than snap candids, to have the image-making be an active, collaborative process, rather than a passive one. The intent of this series was to approach the subjects, interact with them, isolate them, and ask them to pose.

Andy Heffernan is a talented amateur photographer with an eye for the interesting. His photos capture his subjects in a way that is natural and organic. He has completed several projects in the United States, as well as Japan.
