Performance of ‘Experiential Fort Night’ an interactive performance event:
Saturday May 19, 2012, 7pm. The opening will continue after the show until 10pm.

From May 4th through May 20th 2012, Royal NoneSuch Gallery presents Fortnight,
a three part installation and performance curated by the Mills MFA class of 2013 in
collaboration with Stephanie Ellis. Inspired by the tradition of building forts as children combined with the theme of night, the artists have created three re-imaginations of the fantastic structures of youth. These explorations of childhood forts, post-apocalyptic shelters, and stories, dancing, and sound have in common a sense of youthful play and the security that comes from built structures.

Stephanie Ellis Bio:

Stephanie Ellis is an interdisciplinary scholar who teaches studio as well as cultural
studies seminars. Her seminars examine the ethics of knowledge production and
dissemination. The agenda is to investigate how visual relations exclude or ignore what does not fit into ideal categories and she encourages students to ask what intellectual feats produce such erasures. Ellis’ MFA and PhD in the Theories and Practices of Visual Culture are from the University of California at Davis. She is a recipient of the UCD Skowhegan School Scholarship and the UC Intercampus Arts Program Grant. Her writing has appeared in journals such as parallax, Feminist Studies, and Architectural Design. She is also a curator (Work/Space, a nationally traveling exhibition on corporate culture) and an artist (Bad Girls West).

About the Gallery
Royal NoneSuch Gallery is an artist-run alternative art and event space located in the Temescal district of Oakland, California. We are dedicated to creating community around art-based experiences that are thought provoking and conceptually rigorous, while also being accessible and fun. Through a framework of monthly exhibitions and related programs, we strive to maintain a dynamic schedule in which the gallery is continuously reinvented to reflect the spirit and process of an artist, specific program series, or collaboration. The Royal NoneSuch Gallery is not motivated by commercial interests, but instead by working with other artists and creators to facilitate experimentation and social engagement through monthly exhibitions and events. We encourage artists to translate their studio practice, not only into a month long installation, but into a social context that allows the public to actively connect with the central concepts and ideas of the exhibition through opportunities for participation. We take active responsibility for being part of an emerging art scene in Oakland by encouraging an atmosphere of creative risk taking from artists and participation from the community, aiming always for public experiences that are inclusive, innovative, and educational. Visitors to Royal NoneSuch can expect to see, hear, learn, experiment, and participate.
