Forro Brazuca plays wild Brazilian Dance Music

It's a night of some of the wildest dance music to come out of Brazil as FORRO BRAZUCA brings its irresistible grooves to the Ashkenaz stage on Friday, March 26, with DJ CARIOCA spinning recorded Brazilian grooves during band breaks.



Forró Brazuca plays the sensuous upbeat sounds of northeastern Brazil like no other band on the West Coast. Inspired by the music of wild accordionist Luiz Gonzaga, Jackson do Pandeiro, Trio Virgulino, and Dominguinhos, Forró Brazuca performs Latin, folk, and roots music at its festive, rollicking best! Formed by four San Francisco-based Brazilians - each from a different region of Brazil - in early 2007, this band has been bringing its accordion-powered dance music (very similar to zydeco and Cajun music, and just as high energy) to venues all across the Bay Area, with accordionist Mestre Francelino, triangle player Carlos Baiano, bassist Carlos Oliveira, and drummer Chris Carioca.



Even if the names of forro pioneers who inspired Forro Brazuca may be unfamiliar, their sound and songs have inspired creative musicians around the world. Unlike the smoother samba and bossa nova sounds to the south (Rio and Sao Paolo), or the similarly named but far different choro (jazzy strings and clarinet), northeastern Brazil's forro is more rootsy and more energetically charged. It strips music to sweaty essentials, with the jerky squeezebox and percussion grounding the vocals and anything else the band tosses in. When David Byrne (Talking Heads) began his Luaka Bop label to put out his favorite world music, one of the record company's first releases in his Brazil Classics series was devoted to forro. More recently Bryne has worked with the band Forro in the Dark. Forro Brazuca builds on that colorful tradition, playing classics and original tunes including "Solidao da Vida" and "Forro' Boca Quente."

Doors open at 8:00 p.m., followed by a forro dance lesson at 8:30. Live music begins at 9:30 p.m. at Ashkenaz, Berkeley's non-profit world music center, 1317 San Pablo Ave. Tickets are $13 at the door, $10 in advance and students with ID, available in advance through http://www.ticketweb.com, or at Ashkenaz during shows.
